How to Effectively Engage Recruiters for Job Success: The 3 P's You Need to Know

Most recruiters genuinely love helping people, and yes, they are paid well, but for them to assist you effectively, it's imperative that you do these three things: Be patient, be proactive, and be prepared.

BEING PATIENCE Being patient is essential, recognizing that recruiters need time to coordinate with multiple people to give you actionable feedback. Understand that things can change, and requirements may shift suddenly, often necessitating a repurposing of your initial position to keep you in the race, assuming you're still qualified after the requirements overhaul.

This takes time, sometimes involving gauging other candidates and receiving feedback from hiring managers and the client based on past candidates, then fine-tuning the role requirements perfectly to match the right person with the job. This process helps them, protects the firm, and most importantly, ensures they earn their commission. Remember, it's not always the recruiter; hiring managers can change directions, or a client can go cold unexpectedly.

BEING PROACTIVE Being proactive means recruiters are not mind readers, and unfortunately, you are one of many, so details can get lost. However, if you help them by providing detailed information, following up effectively, and crafting a well-tailored resume that matches the job description, you'll be on the winning side. You also need to ask good questions about the client or hiring manager's expectations, learn where other candidates dropped the ball, or identify what they were missing.

While you have a recruiter's attention, you want to build that relationship but also extract as much useful information as possible to better prepare your resume and progress to the next step. Additionally, never forget you are in this for the long game. Put personal dislikes aside and always stay professional. Being clear, concise, professional, firm, yet personable sets a clear foundation of respect. Should you find any other opportunities at their company that interest you, provide all the details to them and ask to be introduced to the hiring manager or recruiter handling that role.

BEING PREPARED Being prepared involves sending your updated, tailored resume over to them that day or first thing the next morning. Things move quickly, and you must hustle to get your name in the hat. Also, be early for calls. If the call is at 2 pm, make sure all your technology is functioning well before 1:30 pm, and aim to arrive at the call 10 minutes early if it’s virtual.

Be on time and available for phone calls, ensuring there are no distractions like music or loud background noise. Set the tone for respect and intentionally have questions ready about the role you can ask. The recruiter needs to get back to you. After the call, send a recap email thanking them for their time, highlight the role, reattach your resume, include your LinkedIn link under your name, and provide them with the questions you asked so they can reference everything easily.

The more organized and easy to locate and pinpoint you are in the sea of applications and emails, the easier it makes for the recruiter to help you better. These are things I learned as a recruiter, working with recruiters, and hiring them in my professional career. I hope this helps, and remember, get paid what you're worth.
